Born "Simon", St. Peter was one of the twelve apostles. Jesus changed Peter's name and assigned him to be the leader of the Church, the first Pope. It is said that Jesus gave Peter the keys to heaven, so he is often depicted as holding keys. Peter is honored on June 29th along with St. Paul.
