The tabernacle is adorned with symbols of the crucifixion.
In the center is a picture of a pelican tearing at its breast to feed its young with its blood. In ancient times it was
thought that the dedication of the pelican to its young was so great that in times when there was no food, the pelican
would feed its young with its own blood. Thus it became a symbol for the sacrifice that Christ made for us.
Above the pelican are the nails and crown of thorns; to the right is the ladder and hissop;
to the left are the spears and hammer; and below are the forceps and whip.
